FISCHERSPOONER releases its first art book, New Truth, a retrospective overview of the project from 1998-2003.
Founded by artists Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner in 1998, Fischerspooner is an ongoing project about the relationship between art and entertainment. Its first incarnation was a two-person low-fi electro-pop performance at the Astor Place Starbucks in New York City. From this auspicious and audacious debut, the project soon swelled to include an army of collaborators, and has since performed in galleries, museums, nightclubs, concert halls, and on television. Fischerspooner uses the languages of popular entertainment as it’s medium. Music, performance, dance, fashion, film, design, publicity and photography are all elements that Fischerspooner uses to fabricate its illusion of glamor and popularity - a 21st century, post-pop Gesamtkunstwerk.
This kaleidoscopic monograph provides unprecedented insight into the first five years of the project. From early downtown New York performances, through a blitz of of art world success, to mainstream visibility via major label recording contracts, New Truth chronicles Fischerspooner’s quest to upend boundaries, exploring the expressive potential located in the gap between popular entertainment and art. Embracing artificiality, lowbrow idioms and high-end production values, while simultaneously revealing and celebrating the inner workings of creative process and production, Fischerspooner proposes a new concept of authenticity—a “new truth.”
New Truth visualizes the colorful beginnings of Fischerspooner with documentation of rehearsals and performances, costumes, props, ephemera, studio portraiture and film stills. Original essays by Klaus Biesenbach, Gavin Brown, Jeffrey Deitch, Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner, provide unique and personal accounts of Fischerspooner’s historical and conceptual implications.
